What Are Flavonoids in Lumber?

While working in the warehouse pulling orders, we came across a fascinating feature in a bundle of Eastern White Pine: a bright pink coloration caused by flavonoids. Found in all plant species, flavonoids are the pigments responsible for making beets red, blueberries blue, and even some woods uniquely colored. In the case of Douglas Fir, flavonoids are known for creating vibrant pink tones, but they can also occasionally appear in species like Eastern White Pine.

The pinkish hue results from minerals and nutrients absorbed by the tree as it grew. While uncommon in White Pine, it’s a natural characteristic that many appreciate for the added personality it gives to the wood. If a customer encounters this and prefers not to highlight it, it's worth noting that acidic wood cleaners should be avoided, as they can intensify the color. Over time, sunlight can fade the color in exterior applications, but for interior use, it remains part of the wood’s inherent charm.

For those who enjoy learning about the unique aspects of natural materials, flavonoids are just one of many fascinating details found in wood.
